Soggy, Scratched, and Dropped: We Put Flagship Phones Through a British Year
There's a particular kind of British phone disaster that no IP rating has ever truly prepared for. It's not the dramatic swimming pool plunge or the cinematic slow-motion drop onto marble flooring. It's the Tuesday morning where your phone spends forty minutes in a coat pocket that's been thoroughly soaked by horizontal Mancunian rain, followed by an afternoon rattling around a bag with keys, loose change, and a rogue pen lid. Then it gets dropped face-down on wet tarmac outside a Greggs.
This is the actual threat landscape for a UK smartphone. And yet, when manufacturers publish durability claims, they're almost always referencing controlled laboratory conditions that bear little resemblance to the above scenario. We spent the better part of a year putting four of the most popular premium handsets through genuinely British conditions to find out which ones earn their keep — and which are trading on a reputation they haven't quite justified.
The Phones in Question
We focused on devices that dominate the UK premium market: the Samsung Galaxy S24, the Apple iPhone 15 Pro, the Google Pixel 8 Pro, and the Sony Xperia 1 VI. All four carry IP68 ratings. All four cost upwards of £900 at launch. All four are marketed, to varying degrees, as resilient, long-lasting devices built to handle modern life.
Each handset was used as a primary device by a different member of the Phone Week team across varied lifestyles — urban commuting, suburban family life, rural outdoors use, and a fairly chaotic student environment in Leeds. We tracked screen condition, camera performance degradation, button and port integrity, battery capacity decline, and any unexpected failures over the testing period.
What IP68 Actually Means (And What It Doesn't)
Before getting into results, it's worth being clear about what an IP68 certification guarantees — because the marketing spin around it is considerable.
IP68 means the device has been tested to withstand submersion in fresh water up to a specified depth (typically 1.5 to 6 metres, depending on the manufacturer) for up to 30 minutes under controlled conditions. The key word there is fresh. Seawater, chlorinated pool water, and — crucially — the mildly acidic, mineral-heavy rainwater that falls on a British city are all outside the scope of the test. The certification also says nothing about repeated exposure, long-term seal degradation, or what happens after a drop compromises the casing integrity.
Manufacturers will tell you in the small print that water damage isn't covered under warranty even on IP68-rated devices. That should tell you something.
The Samsung Galaxy S24: Solid, But Not Invincible
Samsung's flagship performed well under most conditions. The Gorilla Glass Armour on the front survived several concrete drops without cracking, though it accumulated visible micro-scratches within the first two months that caught the light unflatteringly. The aluminium frame developed minor scuffing around the corners by month four — entirely cosmetic, but a reminder that 'premium materials' and 'scratch-proof materials' are not the same thing.
Where Samsung surprised us was in rain resistance. After a sustained period of use in heavy Welsh coastal rain — not submersion, just persistent damp — the S24 showed no functional issues whatsoever. The speaker grilles, which are a common weak point for moisture ingress, remained clear. Battery capacity, measured against a baseline using Samsung's own diagnostics, had declined by approximately 7% after twelve months of heavy use. Acceptable, if not class-leading.
Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Premium Price, Premium Protection
The titanium-framed iPhone 15 Pro was, frankly, the most resilient device in our test. The titanium body resisted scratching far better than either aluminium or glass-backed alternatives, and after a year of daily use — including one particularly ugly drop onto a York cobblestone from about a metre — the frame showed only minimal witness marks. The ceramic shield front glass held up impressively, with just two hairline scratches visible under direct light.
Apple's seal integrity also appeared to hold up better over time than the competition. After several months of regular exposure to rain and one accidental dishwasher-adjacent incident that we won't go into detail about, the 15 Pro continued performing without issue. Battery health after twelve months sat at 91%, which is among the best we've recorded.
The caveat? Apple's repair costs if something does go wrong are eye-watering, and the lack of a physical SIM tray in UK models (eSIM only from the 15 series onwards) introduces a different kind of vulnerability for those who travel or switch networks regularly.
Google Pixel 8 Pro: The Durability Dark Horse
The Pixel 8 Pro divided opinion on the team. Its polished glass back — while undeniably attractive — proved a fingerprint magnet and picked up surface scratches faster than any other device in the test. By month three, it looked noticeably more worn than the Samsung or iPhone despite receiving comparable treatment.
However, functionally, it was rock solid. Google's temperature extremes handling was notably good — the Pixel barely flinched during a Scottish winter camping trip where ambient temperatures dropped well below freezing overnight, whereas the Samsung required a brief warm-up period before the display responded properly. The Pixel's camera system also showed no degradation in image quality over the testing period, which matters when the camera is the primary reason most people buy it.
Battery decline was the Pixel's weak point — down to 85% capacity by month twelve under heavy use. Not disastrous, but trailing the field.
Sony Xperia 1 VI: Built Different, For Better and Worse
Sony's flagship is an odd proposition in the UK market — niche, expensive, and aimed squarely at enthusiasts. Its durability story is similarly mixed. The Xperia carries an IP65 and IP68 dual rating, and Sony's build quality is genuinely impressive in a traditional sense; the device felt the most 'solid' of the four when handled. It also survived our test period without any structural issues.
But its tall, narrow form factor made it significantly more susceptible to being knocked off surfaces than the others, and the dedicated camera shutter button — a feature Sony enthusiasts love — showed some play in its action by month ten. Minor, but worth noting on a device at this price point.
The Honest Verdict
If durability in genuine UK conditions is your priority, the iPhone 15 Pro is the benchmark. It costs more to repair but requires it less often. The Samsung Galaxy S24 is the best all-rounder for those who want solid protection without Apple's ecosystem lock-in. The Pixel 8 Pro will look its age faster than you'd like, but it won't let you down functionally. And the Xperia is a specialist tool for specialist users — respect its quirks and it'll serve you well.
What none of these devices are, despite what the spec sheets imply, is indestructible. A decent case and a screen protector remain the most cost-effective durability upgrade you can make — and no IP rating changes that.
