Data Gluttons: The Apps Secretly Gorging on Your Monthly Allowance

Most of us have a rough mental model of how we use our data. Streaming Netflix on the commute, the odd YouTube rabbit hole, maybe a bit of TikTok before bed. The big, obvious stuff. What we tend to underestimate — sometimes dramatically — is the quiet background activity that carries on regardless of whether we're actively using our phones.

Over the course of four weeks, we monitored data consumption across 20 of the most commonly used apps in the UK, using a combination of Android's built-in data tracking tools, iOS's mobile data settings, and a dedicated monitoring app to capture granular background usage. The results ranged from mildly surprising to genuinely jaw-dropping.

The Usual Suspects Are Worse Than You Think

Let's start with streaming. Most people assume Netflix or BBC iPlayer are their biggest data consumers, and for active use, they're right. But the interesting finding is what happens when you're not watching. Netflix, for instance, pre-downloads content for offline viewing — a feature most users have enabled without realising it. During our test period, Netflix consumed an average of 340MB per day in the background on a standard account with downloads enabled, even on days when no content was actively streamed.

BBC iPlayer was better behaved, averaging around 80MB of background activity daily, though this spiked significantly after app updates. ITV Hub (now ITVX) was the worst performer of the public broadcasters, recording background usage of over 200MB on several days — largely, we believe, attributable to its aggressive ad-targeting and content prefetching systems.

The Ones Nobody Suspects

Here's where it gets interesting. The apps that surprised us most weren't the obvious streaming platforms — they were the ones you'd consider low-data by nature.

Google Maps consumed an average of 180MB per week in the background across our test devices, even when we hadn't opened the navigation app once. This appears to be driven by Google's location history and traffic data collection, which runs continuously unless you explicitly disable it. Most users have never touched that setting.

WhatsApp is another one. While messages themselves are tiny, the app's automatic media download feature — which is on by default — means every photo, video, and voice note sent to any group you're in downloads automatically over mobile data if you're not on Wi-Fi. In active group chats, this can add up to several gigabytes a month. During our test, one device with membership of just four busy WhatsApp groups racked up 1.8GB in a single week from auto-downloads alone.

Facebook remains one of the most aggressive background data users we've tested. Even with video autoplay disabled, the app averaged 220MB of background data per day — a figure that climbed to over 400MB when the app hadn't been opened for several days, suggesting it front-loads content in anticipation of your next session. Meta has not publicly explained this behaviour in detail.

Background Syncing: The Network Variable Nobody Talks About

One of the more nuanced findings from our testing is that background data consumption isn't consistent across networks. The same app, on the same handset, with the same settings, used measurably different amounts of data depending on whether the device was connected to EE, O2, Vodafone, or Three.

This is partly down to network-level data compression (some networks apply it, others don't), partly down to how aggressively each network's infrastructure manages background connections, and partly down to carrier-specific app configurations — some networks ship handsets with slightly modified app settings that affect sync frequency.

The differences weren't enormous, but they were consistent. Across our test period, devices on Three tended to show higher background data consumption than devices on O2 for the same apps, which we believe is related to Three's less aggressive background data throttling policies. Whether that's a feature or a bug rather depends on your perspective.

The Hidden Data Vampires: A Quick Reference

Based on our four-week test, here are the apps that consistently exceeded what most users would expect from background activity:

Plugging the Leaks: Settings That Actually Help

The good news is that most of this is fixable without giving up the apps you actually use.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > Mobile Data and scroll through your app list. Toggle off mobile data for any app you're happy to only use on Wi-Fi. For WhatsApp specifically, go into the app's Settings > Storage and Data > When Using Mobile Data and switch all auto-download options to off.

On Android: Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage gives you a breakdown by app. Tap any app to restrict background data — this stops it syncing when you're not actively using it. It's also worth enabling Data Saver mode (Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver), which restricts background activity across the board.

For Google Maps: In the app, go to your profile icon > Settings > Personal content and disable Location History. You can also go to Google's My Activity page in a browser and restrict what location data is collected.

For WhatsApp: The auto-download settings are buried but powerful. Settings > Storage and Data lets you separately control what downloads over mobile data versus Wi-Fi. Set everything to Wi-Fi only and you'll likely save hundreds of megabytes a week.

Is Your Allowance Actually Big Enough?

Here's the uncomfortable question our research raises: are UK mobile data allowances sold on the basis of active usage, when the reality is that background activity alone can consume a substantial portion of a modest plan?

A user on a 5GB monthly plan who actively streams for an hour a day might reasonably expect that to be fine. But if background activity from a handful of common apps is consuming 2–3GB without any deliberate use, the maths stops working fairly quickly — and the network benefits from the overage charges or the upsell to a more expensive plan.

We're not alleging bad faith. But it's worth knowing that when networks advertise data allowances, they're not accounting for the invisible consumption that modern smartphones generate simply by existing in your pocket. Now you know how to fight back.
