Xiaomi Leads India’s Smartphone Market Once Again: Can GenAI Features Push The Demand In 2024?

Xiaomi is back to the top of India’s smartphone ladder, surpassing Samsung which has now moved to the third spot behind Vivo, as per the latest industry reports. Xiaomi had seen its demand dwindle on the back of a massive launch spree for similar products which clearly didn’t appeal to the buyers.

In fact, the brand has stayed away from the top of the perch for the last two quarters. But the recent changes seem to have helped its case as the market share of 18 percent suggests in the Canalys report. The previous quarter share of Xiaomi was 15 percent, as highlighted in the data, which is a decent growth for the brand.

Having said that, the overall smartphone market has taken a beating in the past few quarters and even in Q2 2024, the growth of 1 percent recorded is the lowest it has been for years. The total shipment of smartphones has marginally gone up from 36.1 million in Q2 2023 to 36.4 million in the last quarter.

Top 5 Smartphones Brands In India Q2 2024

– Xiaomi

– Vivo

– Samsung

– Realme

– Oppo

The list here from Canlys clearly shows the efforts of Vivo proving worthwhile, especially with its focus on the V-series devices and other offline products. Realme is a surprising name at 4th spot on the list, and it seems the company’s gung-ho approach with launches has aided its cause.

The report also did a survey which suggests happy days for the market in the next 12 months when brands like Apple, Vivo and Samsung will be bringing their respective products with GenAI features baked inside. Samsung has already introduced its GenAI-powered tools with the Galaxy S24 series and the Galaxy Z Fold devices. Apple is going to do the same with the iPhone 16 series soon, while Google could spring a surprise when the Pixel 9 lineup rolls out in August.

The main reasons behind the low growth in this market have been attributed to limited budget phones available, many feature phone users happy to continue using their devices and the increasing demand for second-hand phones.
