Microsoft Edge’s New Game Assist Preview Makes In-Game Browsing Effortless

What to know

  • Edge Game Assist lets you browse the web while gaming without switching windows.
  • You need Windows 11 and Edge Beta 132 to use this feature.
  • The tool works best with nine specific games but has some limitations in this preview version.

Microsoft’s Edge Game Assist helps PC gamers browse while playing. Recent data shows that most gamers use browsers during gameplay to look up tips and guides.

You’ll need Windows 11 and Microsoft Edge Beta version 132 or higher to use Game Assist. To install it, make Edge Beta your default browser in Windows Settings under Apps and Default apps. Then open Edge Beta, go to Settings, look for “Game Assist,” and click “Install widget.” You might need to restart Edge Beta a few times to see this option.

The browser window floats over your game screen. You can move it around, change its size, and adjust how transparent it looks. When you watch videos, the window automatically adjusts its size and returns to normal when you’re done.

You can add shortcuts to Discord, Twitch, and Spotify in a side panel. The tool works with Baldur’s Gate 3, Diablo IV, Fortnite, Hellblade II, League of Legends, Minecraft, Overwatch 2, Roblox, and Valorant. For these games, it shows tips and guides automatically.

The tool uses your Edge browser information, including your bookmarks and passwords. Press Win+G to open it while gaming.

Some problems exist in this early version though. The window closes if you don’t use it for a while. Your tabs come back when you reopen it, but your browsing history doesn’t save. Right-clicking doesn’t work yet, and some keyboard shortcuts don’t function. You can only use a keyboard and mouse – no game controllers yet.

The tool makes it easier to look things up while playing games, especially if you often check guides or chat with friends online.
